Masseria Donadio

The roots of the Donadio family in Puglia date back to the 12th century and they left a significant mark on the history of Bitonto. Chroniclers recorded Pasquale Donadio being rector of the Episcopal seminary in 1773 and Francesco a respected doctor at the University of Naples. In 1912, Vincenzo Donadio founded the Order of Pharmacists in Puglia, a tradition of culture, profession and civil commitment. The noble Donadio family played important roles in town life through their legal studies and public initiatives. Casina Donadio preserves the charm of the era in which aristocratic families enjoyed country residences, and it is striking in its impressive elegance. The year of construction, 1792, is indicated on the iron arch of the door, above which sits the family coat of arms, a comet carved into the stone, an emblem of light and destiny. A bifora in the tower looks out over the horizon. Next to the residence sits the small private chapel, revealing the spiritual side of the family: a bell tower with bifora, but without bells remains as a sign of devotion. On the façade is the inscription “Qui non si gode asile”.
In the past, gangs of degenerates, thieves and criminals rampaged through the region, seeking refuge in churches and sacred places to avoid the law, certain to find protection. At the beginning of the new century, that illusion was crushed: on the entrances of churches the inscription was made to remind these people that there was no escape from justice even in holy places. The inscription on Casina Donadio was a reminder of that principle: there would be no refuge for anyone breaking the law or daring to challenge the enforcement of the law. At the back of the building an entrance for carts reminds the visitor of the passage of carts and goods coming and going, the noble life having close ties to the agriculture rhythms of the land. Casina Donadio tells the story of a family who left a lasting sign in the country and in the town with their elegance, power and their deep connection with the area.
